Helping people with type 2 diabetes become more physically active

ACTIVATE is a research study evaluating whether digital technology, personalised feedback and financial rewards can help people living with type 2 diabetes become more physically active.

Participants use the ACTIVATE mobile app alongside a compatible activity tracker to monitor their daily physical activity throughout the study. The app provides information about activity progress, supports participation in the research, and enables participants to receive personalised feedback and rewards where applicable.

The study is being conducted by researchers from Loughborough University in collaboration with Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Milton Keynes City Council.

What does the ACTIVATE app do?

The ACTIVATE app allows participants to:

securely register for the study app
connect their Google Health account to share physical activity data
monitor daily activity recorded by their wearable device
view progress throughout the study
receive study communications and personalised notifications
participate in research evaluating new approaches to increasing physical activity.

The app is intended solely for individuals enrolled in the ACTIVATE research study.

Why does the app request access to Google Health data?

With your permission, the ACTIVATE app requests access to selected physical activity data from your Google account (including Health Connect where applicable).

This information is used only for purposes directly related to the ACTIVATE research study, including:

measuring daily physical activity
evaluating participation in the intervention
calculating progress towards study goals
analysing study outcomes.

The app only requests the data necessary to conduct the research. Your data are handled securely and are not used for advertising or commercial purposes.

You can revoke access to your Google account at any time through your Google account settings.

Protecting participant privacy is a fundamental part of the ACTIVATE study.

All personal information and activity data are processed in accordance with UK data protection legislation and the study's ethical approvals.
