ACTIVATE App Terms and Conditions
Last updated: 21st July 2026
These Terms and Conditions apply to your use of the ACTIVATE mobile application ("the ACTIVATE app").
The ACTIVATE app has been developed to support participants enrolled in the ACTIVATE research study and Milton Keynes Activity Rewards Programme, which is sponsored by Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (MKUH) and delivered in collaboration with Milton Keynes City Council (MKCC) and Loughborough University.
The ACTIVATE app is owned by Milton Keynes City Council. Loughborough University supports the delivery and administration of the ACTIVATE study under agreement with Milton Keynes University Hospital.
By accessing or using the ACTIVATE app, you agree to these Terms and Conditions.
PLEASE NOTE: These Terms and Conditions do not replace the Participant Information Sheet or Consent Form for the ACTIVATE study. If there is any inconsistency between these Terms and Conditions and the approved study documents, the approved study documents will apply to your participation in the research study.
1. Purpose of the ACTIVATE app
The ACTIVATE app has been developed to support participation in the Milton Keynes Activity Rewards Programme, which evaluates approaches to increasing physical activity among people living with type 2 diabetes.
The app allows participants to:
connect the Fitbit device provided as part of the ACTIVATE intervention;
collect and view physical activity information;
receive study-related information and notifications;
support participation in the ACTIVATE intervention;
track progress towards study-related activity goals.
The ACTIVATE app is intended only for individuals who have been recruited and consented to participate in the ACTIVATE research study.
2. Eligibility and access
Access to the ACTIVATE app is provided only to eligible and consented participants enrolled in the ACTIVATE randomised controlled trial.
By using the ACTIVATE app, you agree that you will:
provide accurate information if/when requested;
keep your account access details secure;
only use the app for your own participation in the ACTIVATE study;
not share your account access with another person.
If you believe that your account has been accessed without permission, please contact the ACTIVATE research team [email protected].
3. Use of Fitbit devices and activity data
As part of the ACTIVATE intervention, participants will be provided with a Fitbit device to monitor their physical activity.
The ACTIVATE app securely collects activity information recorded by the Fitbit device to support participation in the study and evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.
Participants will be asked to provide permission for their Fitbit account to be connected with the ACTIVATE app. This allows relevant physical activity information recorded by the Fitbit device to be transferred securely to the ACTIVATE study platform.
The information collected may include measures such as:
daily step count;
physical activity duration;
activity intensity; and
other physical activity measures required for the ACTIVATE study.
The ACTIVATE app only accesses information that participants have consented to share and that is required for the ACTIVATE Study
Participants can manage or withdraw their Fitbit connection permissions through their Fitbit account settings. If access is withdrawn, the ACTIVATE app may not be able to calculate activity goals, monitor progress or support reward functionality.
Further information about how personal information and activity data are collected, stored and used is available in the ACTIVATE Privacy Notice.
4. Research purposes and medical information
The ACTIVATE app is provided as part of a Milton Keynes Activity Rewards Programme and ACTIVATE research study
Information collected through the app will be used only for the purposes described in the Participant Information Sheet, Consent Form and Privacy Notice.
The app is not intended to provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment recommendations.
You should continue to follow advice provided by your healthcare professionals.
5. Rewards and incentives
Where applicable, participants may receive rewards or incentives as part of the ACTIVATE intervention.
Rewards and incentives are provided according to the rules and criteria described in the Participant Information Sheet and study documentation.
Participation in the ACTIVATE study does not guarantee receipt of rewards or incentives where eligibility criteria have not been met.
6. Acceptable use
You agree that you will not:
misuse the ACTIVATE app;
attempt to access areas of the app that you are not authorised to access;
interfere with the security or operation of the app;

use the app for purposes unrelated to your participation in the ACTIVATE study.
Access to the app may be restricted or removed if these Terms and Conditions are breached.

Milton Keynes City Council grants you permission to use the ACTIVATE app solely for the purpose of participating in the ACTIVATE research study.
This permission is limited, personal, non-transferable and applies only for the duration of your participation in the study.
You must not copy, modify, distribute, reverse engineer or attempt to extract the source code of the ACTIVATE app.
8. Availability of the app
We aim to ensure that the ACTIVATE app is available and functions correctly. However, we cannot guarantee uninterrupted access.
The app may occasionally be unavailable due to:

9. Intellectual property
The ACTIVATE app, including its content, design, software and materials, is owned by Milton Keynes City Council and its delivery partners.
All intellectual property rights relating to the app remain with the relevant owners.
10. Changes to these Terms and Conditions
These Terms and Conditions may be updated where necessary, for example due to changes in the app, study requirements or legal obligations.
Where significant changes are made, participants will be informed where appropriate.
11. Ending your access to the app
Your access to the ACTIVATE app may end:
when your participation in the study finishes;
if you withdraw from the study;
